He conceded the attention and drama around the decision had taken its toll.
“It’s been very tough on my personal relationship. In fact, it’s ended my personal relationship so that’s very sad,” he told Youth Jam.
“We live our lives the way we live our lives. My partner couldn’t handle it and she kept breaking down.
“I thought, ‘Well, that’s the last thing I need. I’ve got enough vegans on my back’.
“The last thing is, I don’t want to upset anybody.”
The chef, who has worked with the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White, introduced the controversial ban following a dispute with a vegan diner who he had promised to accommodate but later could not.
He told 7NEWS he conceded he had not held up his end of the bargain but argued the complaint went beyond genuine feedback and had become personal when the customer claimed not having “plant-based meals shows your shortcomings as a chef”.
The pile-on from the vegan community was strong too – with an avalanche of poor reviews sinking his Google rating, hundreds of prank calls to his personal phone and tables of up to 10 people being booked with diners never intending to show.
But Mountain said business is booming, with the attention on his restaurant seeing more customers streaming through the doors than ever before.
“Thanks to the vegans. I love you,” he said.
“I’m over the moon.”
