Welcome to the weekly Port City Foodies newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Allison Ballard. If there was a lull in food news from the holiday weekend, you couldn’t tell it now. Are you going to check out one of the area’s newest eateries? Or are you following along as these local chefs continue their journey? If so, check it all out below.
New to the scene
Word has it that two long-awaited local eateries will be *softly* joining the Wilmington area this weekend. The first is Bowstring Burgers and Brewyard, a sister business to Raleigh’s Bowstring Pizza and Brewyard. There is a ribbon cutting Friday, followed by limited hours this weekend in the Soda Pop District. We have a few of the details – and photos! In midtown, Covey restaurant, a fine dining restaurant near Live Oak Bank is poised to open, too. You can learn more here. And, in case you missed it, here’s a look at some other restaurants that have opened (or closed) in recent weeks.
Lovin’ that local talent
Have you noticed that some of your favorite local chefs have been posting about a national competition? A handful of them are in the running to become the country’s Favorite Chef, a fundraising contest hosted by celebrity chef Carla Hall. Now, they’ve made it through to the next round. Speaking of chefs, two other favorites in the Wilmington area have a new gig. Read more here.
Things to do
Maybe the thought of exercising when it’s so hot outside isn’t so tempting. But what if there was a cold beer and / or delicious food waiting for you at the end? If that thought makes you want to lace up some running shoes, check out one of these local groups (there are options in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick counties). I’ve also updated a list of July food-and-drink events – so there are even more wine dinners and beer parties to enjoy.
