Suffolk residents with a sweet tooth beware — the third annual Suffolk Sweets Week returns with loads of sugary-goodness, Saturday, July 15 through Saturday, July 22.
Started back in July 2021, the event showcases the city’s best when it comes to delicious desserts.
Suffolk Tourism Development Specialist Kathleen Kelley explained how the showcase came about.
“Several of the dessert eateries and cafés had expressed disappointment that they weren’t able to participate in our Restaurant Week promotions,” she said.”This was our way of including them in a city-wide promotion that highlights their offerings specifically. This is a continuation of our years-long Love Local Buy Suffolk campaign, in which we highlight all the wonderful small businesses that make up our vibrant city.”
Six locations have already said they are participating — Baron’s Pub, Derl’z Restaurant and Pub, Harper’s Table, The Pink Box, Sugar Mama’s Bakeshoppe and Vintage Tavern.
Desserts include bread pudding, banana pudding, cupcakes, cookie skillets, cinnamon rolls, brownie sundaes, cheesecake and much more. Adult visitors can also help themselves to “a glass of fine whiskey” at the showcase, she said..
When items run out, Kelley said they’re out. She also explained what residents and visitors can expect with each restaurant furnishing them a menu highlighting a main dessert alongside multiple other sweet offerings.
“None of the selections are priced above $12 and all will be available during the promotion’s run of July 15-22. If you’re interested in trying a tasty dessert, check out the menus on VisitSuffolkVa.com (under the dine section) and decide where you want to go,” Kelley said. “We do have their operating hours listed as well, so make sure you make note of that when you want to try an establishment. Then, just stop by and fill up on your favorite dessert.”
Kelley said she hopes residents will turn out to experience some of the best desserts in their own city.
“A lot of our dessert eateries and cafes/bakeries get lost in the shuffle of the big restaurant news, and we want people to realize how many decadent sweets are available right here in Suffolk,” she said. “You don’t have to go all the way to New York City to get a fantastic piece of cheesecake when something just as tasty is right down the street!”
