Kong Dog has installed a Korean street-food inspired concept called Kong Pocha inside its Davis Square location, putting to use since Jan. 15 a large storefront where most patrons were coming in only for takeout.
“Wasted space,” owner Julia Kang called it.
Kong Pocha is a sit-down restaurant with a menu that goes far beyond corn dogs. The concept is inspired by pojangmacha, food tents in South Korea that sell popular street food items. The inside of Kong Dog has been converted to one big pojangmacha: Customers enter through a gap in two hanging tarps into a room lined with similar tarps and given a warming red glow.
The menu provides yet more ramen for the area (with customizable toppings), a Korean bento box, dumplings and other appetizers. The change has brought crowds, who line up waiting to get inside the tent for the only Korean food in the area. (Yoshi’s – not too far at 132 College Ave., Powder House Square – has Korean items as well as sushi and other Japanese dishes; but otherwise it’s a trek to Buk Kyung, 91 Union Square; Koreana, at 158 Prospect St. in The Port neighborhood in Cambridge between Central and Inman squares; or bb.q Chicken fast food, 736 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square, Cambridge. Bonchon is due to reopen in the basement of 57 John F. Kennedy St., Harvard Square, with a menu based around Korean fried chicken.)
“So far people have been liking it,” Kang said. “It used to feel totally empty on weekdays.”
Though tables are for customers ordering from Kong Pocha, the Kong Dog corn dog menu is still available for takeout or for seated customers who also order from the Kong Pocha menu.
“We’re excited about the new menu and hope people continue coming in to try it,” Kang said.
